Eighteen NCAA Division I universities across the U.S. set up a "Points for Pints Intercollegiate Blood Drive Challenge" during the October - March basketball season. Blood drives were held in conjunction with major basketball events on campuses, adding a whole new dimension to the spirit of competition. Penn State emerged as the 2002 winner collecting 4,348 units of blood (see full 2002 results). |

During the week of St. Valentine's Day, February 14, students at one university organized a blood drive with the theme "What's your type?" The registration and refreshments areas were arranged with small tables with red table cloths and extra heart-shaped cookies, creating a pleasant social atmosphere for donors who came in. |

In 2002, a blood drive was held in conjunction with Penn State's Dance Marathon, a 48-hour "no-sitting, no-sleeping, no kidding" fundraising event. The monetary funds raised benefit The Four Diamonds Fund, which provides comprehensive care and monetary support for pediatric cancer patients and their families. The blood donations benefited thousands of patients who need blood every day. |

Students at an Ohio middle school proved that you are never too young to be a hero. While too young to donate blood themselves, students helped save lives by recruiting donors their parents, family members and relatives, friends, faculty, and neighbors. The students also tended the registration and refreshments areas and gave a hand-made "thank you" to each donor. Students at other schools around the country have similarly "adopted" blood drives scheduled by the American Red Cross call 1-800-GIVE LIFE for more information. |

Two rival Midwest universities compete every year in sports, academics, and in… blood donations. They pull in sororities and fraternities, local radio and TV stations, and anyone else they can get involved because as the football coach says, "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing." So, if you need another category to one-up a rival school, how about blood donations? |

A university radio station worked with the American Red Cross to "pump up the volume" and bring in more donors. A t-shirt with a heart wearing headphones and flexing his muscles supported the event. |

In 1999, the University of Missouri-Columbia captured the Guinness Book world record for the largest number of whole blood units collected in a single day at a single location, totaling 3,155 productive units. Students and the University work with faculty and staff, alumni, and the Columbia community to be a part of a tremendous event… but all world records are meant to be beat! |
